I’ve Added This to My Morning Routine

Ever notice how some days you’re unstoppable?

Think back to the last time you were in the zone (aka the flow state). You weren’t thinking about getting the oil changed, taking the kids to soccer practice, or scheduling your next pedi. The flow state requires you to turn down your conscious mind and thoughts. One of the best ways to silence that inner voice is mind dumping. I’ve added a new way of doing this to my morning routine to help live in life’s flow.

Flow State and Alpha Brain State

Conor’s out of control again!

Don’t get it twisted; your conscious mind isn’t always the bad guy. You use it to make the choice to start mind dumping and take your brain to the juicy alpha (and theta) brain state that dominates when your blasting homers all day. Alpha and theta brain waves are associated with the zone, the flow–the brain state that Baker was in when he embarrassed the Redskins on the opening drive of Thursday night’s preseason matchup as he marched the Browns down for a tuddy.

Here’s the tuddy if you missed it!

Bake just picked’em apart!

Flow State and Your Brain and Hormones

Many inputs affect your brain and hormones. The sun, your diet, and workout are all examples of data that change your brain state and hormones. Light creeping in on your retina from your phone blasting your retinohypothalamic tract (fancy name for eye to brain connection) resulting in suppression of melatonin is also an example of data from the environment that affects your brain and hormones.

Put your cellie on airplane mode and filter that light! Remember: keep Bae happy!

Your state of mind and thoughts are also a major player for hormone production. Think back to the last time your wifey, hubby, boss or that asshole that cut you off when you were headed home from work last night. Did you feel tingling in your limbs or a rush of blood to your face? That’s your adrenal glands and nerves releasing adrenaline (epinephrine). Adrenaline serves as an alert for you to get the hell out of danger, so the lion doesn’t bite you in your haunches.  If your pissiness turns chronic, your adrenals start dumping cortisol, which also helps alert you to find out what the hell is wrong and get you to safety.

The Magic

The magic is controlling your thoughts. If someone cuts you off, let that energy and your negative thoughts flow right through you. Avoid bringing your consciousness to that energy and your negative thoughts. Dump your mind. It takes practice. Practice it– every time someone pisses you off.

Book Alert!!!

The Untethered Soul. It took 27 people to convince me to read it before I picked it up. At least read till the end of chapter two, The Inner Roommate. Every chapter is filled with gangsta mind gems that’ll help get you out of your head!

My top mind dumping activities:

  1. work out
  2. artwork
  3. breathwork or meditation
  4. NEW –“morning pages”

“Morning pages–who dis?”

I first learned about morning pages from my wise friend, Anthony, who was recently visiting from France. He recommended Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. One of the most recommended of Julia’s strategies for higher creativity from The Artist’s Way is morning pages. Along with morning pages, her book includes practical activities you can do to unleash your creative mind. It’s another book I recommend–artist or not. Don’t be turned off by the title if your not a hippie artist.

I continue to use journaling in the evening as a way to reflect on the day and mind dump so I’m not lying in bed spinning my wheels. It works like a light switch. But two weeks ago, I add morning pages to my daily journaling.

“Morning Pages are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing, done first thing in the morning. There is no wrong way to do Morning Pages–they are not high art. They are not even “writing.” They are about anything and everything that crosses your mind– and they are for your eyes only. Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize, and synchronize the day at hand. Do not over-think Morning Pages: just put three pages of anything on the page…and then do three more pages tomorrow.”

-Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way

Check out this dope type art piece from Anthony!  Our new art exhibit at the office featuring Anthony’s type art will be on display starting next week! Be sure to come see it!

Our latest exhibit coming soon!

If you struggle to find your flow, inspiration, or creative state, try dumping your mind with morning pages. Do it for at least two weeks– every day–no exceptions. And pay close attention to the changes in the quality of your relationships, work, and happiness. It may be subtle changes. Be patient.

Add morning pages to your morning routine. If you don’t notice your creative expression and productivity skyrocket after two weeks, do it for another two weeks. Then if you don’t see, do it for another two weeks.

Have an awesome weekend!

Your Cornerman with love,

Dr. Thoma
